Familiar Face Returns A familiar face recently returned to the Calderdale Activity Agreement. Kami, now in his first year of studying for a degree in “Youth and Community Services,” returned to the Activity Agreement as part of his work placement at University.
Returning to the Activity Agreement brought back a lot of memories for him.
Kami says, “I can really identify with the young people on the Activity Agreement now. I was one of them. I come from a large family, with parents who didn’t speak english properly and I wasn’t aware of the opportunities that were available to me. The Activity Agreement showed me what the opportunities were and made me realise that if I wanted to achieve something, I would have to do it for myself. It was all down to me. You can’t let things knock you down. You have to get back on your feet. I am now trying to get that message across to the young people that I am working with.”
The skills that Kami learnt on the Activity Agreement eg; working as part of a team, confidence building and people skills, have been beneficial for University life. His fellow students come from across the world, it’s a real mixed group, and Kami has no problem interacting with them. He’s also discovered that he brings a unique perspective to the course. He can demonstrate the other side of youth work and give examples of real life experiences. This has impressed his course tutor and brings the course to life for his fellow students.
Kami is really enjoying the course as it is helping him to understand the theory behind young people’s behaviour. He says “I’m learning about the psychology behind certain behaviours. It all makes sense to me now.”
Once he graduates Kami intends to become a youth worker so that he can pass on all that he has learnt. “Hopefully I can be a role model to young people in the future. I can see myself in all of them.”
