A group of young people on the Activity Agreement approached their Keyworker about participating in a six-week kart maintenance project. The aim of the project is to give young people the chance to learn new skills and in team work, undertanding health and safety and familiarise themselves with Go Karting and maintenance.

The young people were supported by the Activity Agreement to complete a YOF (Youth Opportunity Fund) bid to secure funding for the project, and were successful.

The project, which the young people named Kart Karnage, commenced in May, and the group were fully involved in the planning, implementation and review process. They took part in a week of practical, informative activities such as maintaining engines and parts, changing tyres, re-fuelling, marshalling the track and health and safety, as well as enjoying thrill-seeking race sessions on the track. The group also completed a gun and knife crime awareness session run by West Yorkshire Police, which gave them a real insight to the dangers these weapons are posing to our society.

The course enables the young people to achieve Certificates of Achievement and nationally recognised qualifications through the completion of 1 unit of the Youth Achievement Award and 3 ASDAN credits at Bronze Level.

The young people thoroughly enjoyed the project and were really proud to be part of the whole process from planning to execution.
