Building a Successful Future Steve is employed by a construction company. He is a fully qualified Fork Lift Truck driver who has just applied to go to college to do an apprenticeship. Steve is confident of his abilities and is positive about his future, but it wasn’t always like this…
Nadine, a Kirklees Keyworker, remembers her first impression of Steve. “He had no confidence and didn’t know what his options were or where to start. His lack of confidence was the first area that we started working on when Steve joined the Activity Agreement.”
Steve attended a workshop on ‘Effectiveness in the work place’ which taught him techniques in improving his confidence at work, time management, conversation techniques and assertiveness. Nadine says “ Steve really enjoyed the workshop. He always turned up on time, participated and got on well with the other teenagers on the course.”
During one of his catch up sessions with Nadine, Steve expressed an interest in a career in the construction industry and particularly in fork lift truck driving.
Nadine arranged for Steve to attend a Fork Lift Truck driving course as part of his Activity Agreement and once he had successfully completed the course, she arranged for him to have a work placement at Kirklees Building Services where he could not only use his new skills but also gain valuable work experience.
Steve was soon developing a reputation as a reliable and concientious worker, to the extent that he was offered a permanent job for a private building maintenance company, which he accepted.
With Nadine’s assistance, Steve has applied to college this year to undertake an apprenticeship which his employer is supporting. Says Steve, “the Activity Agreement has been brilliant. There is no way I would be doing any of this without it. I wouldn’t have had the confidence for a start.”
Nadine is proud of all that Steve has achieved. “His confidence and self esteem have greatly increased and now there is no stopping him. He should be very proud of himself.”
